I’ve been hearing this a lot recently…
“Our supervisors aren’t driving the culture.”
Maybe.
But here’s my question.
Who trained them to?
Whether you call them new team managers, shift leads, supervisors, team leaders or frontline leaders, the title doesn’t really matter.
Most were great operators.
Then one day they got promoted.
Suddenly they’re expected to lead people. Deal with conflict. Challenge poor behaviours. Keep production moving. Hit targets. Improve safety. Motivate the team.
That’s a big jump.
Yet many have never had any real leadership training.
After 16 years working with organisations across the UK, Europe and the US, this is one of the biggest gaps we see.
Senior leaders set the direction.
Frontline leaders make it happen.
They’re the people who decide what gets challenged… and what gets ignored.
They decide what’s acceptable.
Every conversation.
Every reaction.
Every decision sends a signal.
People don’t follow posters.
They follow people.
The biggest opportunity to improve safety culture probably isn’t another campaign.
It’s giving frontline leaders the skills, confidence and support to lead.
